1. “Sign language is universal.”
Nope. Just like spoken languages, there are hundreds of different sign languages around the world.
2. “It’s just hand gestures.”
Wrong again. Sign language has its own grammar, structure, and way of expressing meaning. It’s a full language, not just waving your hands around.
3. “Only Deaf people need it.”
Actually, anyone can learn it — and everyone benefits when more people know how to sign. Even learning a few basic signs can make communication easier and more inclusive.
4. “It’s easy because it’s visual.”
Not really. Just like spoken languages, fluency takes practice. It’s beautiful, but it’s also complex.
5. “Technology will replace it.”
Captions and apps help, but nothing replaces the culture, identity, and human connection that comes with sign language.
Sign language isn’t “less than” spoken languages. It’s powerful, expressive, and deserves the same respect. The more we learn, the fewer barriers we keep in place.
